Green Card Status

Green card is a document stating that a person is a lawful resident in the United States.

Permanent green card is valid for the period of ten years and can be renewed providing a lawful permanent resident did not commit any serious crimes in the past. There are conditional green cards given to persons who married U.S. citizens for the period of 2 years. If the marriage still lasts it can be converted to a permanent status.

It is important to remember that holding a U.S. green card (having a permanent residency in the United States) is not a right but a privilege. Green card holders have both rights and obligations, and under certain conditions green card status can be revoked.

How to replace lost or stolen green card, see green card replacement. See also renewal and conditional green card.
